As the local road building agency for all of Ada
County, ACHD has led the way in
increasing on-street bicycle lanes and facilities.
This commitment has led to the doubling of the miles of
bikeways over the past decade. Thanks to this effort, the county has more than 180 miles of
on-street bike lanes and more than 46 miles of bike routes.
“THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! First for your quick response and secondly for
re-striping the roads here on the Mesa and completing the bike path on
Windsong. I and the rest of
the cyclists up here are very grateful," said Donna Burns, President of
the Mesa Neighborhood Association.
ACHD has now taken the next step and created a plan that would eventually take bicycle
lanes and connect them in a countywide system that has never
before existed in Ada County. It’s called the
Roadways to
Bikeways Bicycle Master Plan.
Through ACHD's efforts,
Ada County has been designated as a "Bicycle Friendly Community"
by the
League of American Bicyclists.
The Bicycle Advisory Committee, a group
of area cyclists representing commuters and recreational users, advises ACHD
about new road designs, roadway maintenance needs specific to cyclists and other
cycling-related issues. The committee generally meets on the first Monday of each
month at 6 p.m. in the ACHD Auditorium, 3775 Adams St., Garden City.
